چکیده

Under appropriate conditions, both surface areas and cation exchange capacities of clay minerals can be measured by absorption of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. The method has been applied to two kaolinites, one illite, and one montmorillonite, all initially saturated with Na + ions. For Na-montmorillonite, the total area, internal plus external, is measured. For Ca-montmorillonite, entry of methylene blue molecules appears to be restricted by the much smaller expansion of the Caclay in water. X-ray diffraction data clarify the absorption behavior in Naand Ca-montmorillonite, and in particular it is shown that two orientations of the methylene blue molecules are involved.

Distribution of zinc and copper chemical forms and their relationship with some physico-chemical properties and clay minerals in some calcareous soils

Determination and recognition of relative distribution of chemical forms of each element and their relationship with physical, chemical and soil clay minerals can help researchers to manage soil fertility better. This research attempted to recognize chemical fractions of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in some surface and subsurface soil samples of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province and their relati...

Molecular dynamics simulations of sorption of organic compounds at the clay mineral/aqueous solution interface

Applications of molecular modeling procedures to adsorption processes at clay mineral surfaces are described. Using a recently developed empirical force field for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of dioctahedral clays, the interactions of various classes of organic compounds with clay surfaces are being explored, including man-made pollutants, agrochemicals such as pesticides, naturally occu...

Model for Competitive Adsorption of Organic Cations on Clays

-The adsorption on montmorillonite of two monovalent organic cations, methylene blue (MB) and thioflavin T (TFT), was studied in four different situations: (1) separate adsorption of MB or TFT; (2) competitive adsorption of TFT and Cs; (3) competitive adsorption of the two organic cations from their equimolar solutions; and (4) adsorption of TFT on a clay whose cation-exchange capacity (CEC) ha...

Iodide, caesium and strontium adsorption by organophilic vermiculite

Soils represent an important filter and buffer system for many cations and anions. Generally, their sorption properties are determined by the contents and compositions of clay minerals and humic substances. A great part of the soil organic matter is associated with clay minerals forming organomineral complexes (Greenland, 1965) which are of pronounced importance with respect to element transpor...

Determination of Soil Activity in Kenyan Soils from Spectroscopy

Soil activity is a term generally applied to the ability of a soil to take in and dispose water under changing moisture conditions. It is due to presence of clay minerals with a net negative charge to neutralise which, water is attracted to the mineral surface. The water molecules are incorporated in the clay structure in between the clay plates and with increased water; both the exchangeable c...
